THE PATRIOT PLAZA, SARASOTA NATIONAL CEMETERY
As someone who grew up in a military family with many of its traditions, it was an honor to be asked by the Patterson Foundation to document the newly built Patriot Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery. This unique public memorial honoring veterans includes a 2,800-seat glass-covered amphitheater, 48,000-square feet of walkways and gathering spaces, and a collection of commissioned art installations. Patriot Plaza is located in Sarasota at 9810 State Road 72 (on Clark Road east of I75). The Patterson Foundation funded the design and construction of Patriot Plaza. This is the first time a private foundation partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on a project of this complexity at a national cemetery.
